Useful Links to Other Organizations

This list has been compiled by HHMI's International Program staff.

European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)
EMBO works with leading researchers to promote excellence in molecular life sciences in Europe. The Web page contains links to funding opportunities, courses and workshops, publications, reports, and other resources.

The Wellcome Trust's International Senior Research Fellowships
Five-year senior research fellowships in biomedical science to be held in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, or Poland. This opportunity is just one of several offered by the The Wellcome Trust, an independent research-funding charity, established under the will of Sir Henry Wellcome in 1936. The Trust's mission is to foster and promote research with the aim of improving human and animal health.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
AAAS focuses on programs of scientific cooperation in sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, Central Asia (including the countries of the former Soviet Union), the Pacific Rim, and the Western Hemisphere; and on global concerns of population and sustainable development.

Civilian Research and Development Foundation for the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (CRDF)
The U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation for the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (CRDF), founded August 11, 1995, is a private, nonprofit charitable organization created by the United States government as a response to the declining state of science and engineering in the former Soviet Union (FSU). CRDF seeks to address this issue by fostering opportunities for collaborative projects between FSU and U.S. researchers.

Community of Science
Community of Science, Inc., links researchers worldwide through the World Wide Web. The company's products and services are designed to meet the information needs of the scientific R&D community. This large and active market consists primarily of researchers at large institutions such as universities, government agencies, federal laboratories, foundations, and professional societies.

The Foundation Center
The Foundation Center is an independent nonprofit information clearinghouse established in 1956 to foster public understanding of the foundation field by collecting, organizing, analyzing, and disseminating information on foundations, corporate giving, and related subjects.

International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX)
IREX is a nonprofit organization founded in 1968 to administer academic exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research
This is the major federal agency responsible for funding biomedical research in Canada. Its role is to promote, assist, and undertake basic, applied, and clinical research in Canada in the health sciences.

National Academy of Sciences
Congress established the National Academy of Sciences in 1863 so that "... the Academy shall, whenever called upon by any department of the Government, investigate, examine, experiment, and report upon any subject of science or art ...." The Academy now includes the National Research Council, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.

National Cancer Institute of Canada
Formed in 1947 on the joint initiative of the Department of National Health and Welfare and the Canadian Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute of Canada coordinates and correlates the efforts of individuals and organized bodies with a view to reducing the morbidity and mortality from cancer.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The NIH mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. NIH works toward the mission by conducting research in its own laboratories; supporting the research of non-federal scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions throughout the country and abroad; helping in the training of research investigators; and fostering communication of biomedical information. NIH is one of eight health agencies of the Public Health Service which, in turn, is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Fogarty International Center was established in 1968 to advance health through international scientific cooperation and to serve as the organizational locus for NIH international activities. The National Library of Medicine is a part of NIH.

National Science Foundation (NSF)
NSF funds research and education in science and engineering. The NSF International Division enables and encourages U.S. scientists, engineers, and their institutions to avail themselves of opportunities to enhance their research and education programs through international cooperation. NSF also provides opportunities for future generations of U.S. scientists and engineers to gain the experience and outlook they will need to function productively in an international research and education environment.

Science's Next Wave
Published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Science's Next Wave offers resources for the next generation of scientists.

Soros Foundations Network
The nonprofit foundations created by philanthropist George Soros are linked together in an informal network called the Soros Foundations Network. At the heart of this network is a group of autonomous organizations known as National Foundations that operate in 31 countries throughout central and eastern Europe, central Eurasia, South Africa, Haiti, Guatemala, and the United States.
